2010 - The Harrow in LEAF 6th Horticultural Show

Harrow in LEAF held our 6th Annual Horticultural Show over the August bank holiday weekend, and had more stalls, entertainment and attractions than ever to draw in the crowds and keep them busy and happy. The show took place at the Harrow Museum and Heritage Centre, the perfect setting for a family show with a village fete atmosphere.
Apart from some blustery conditions and one downpour on Sunday, the show was blessed with good weather, particularly important when our local ‘Queen’, Mary Reynolds, opened the show on Sunday!

She toured the show with the show manager Derek Osborne, and flower girl Zoe, talking to the stall holders and enjoying the entertainment, including the band and the Indian Dance Group MYCA.

The exhibits in the horticultural and beekeepers marquees showed tremendously high standards of growing, gathering, craftsmanship and showmanship: and with over 100 exhibitors aged from 2 to over 80 entering over 600 exhibits, the tents provided a colourful and informative draw. As well as flowers and vegetables, the classes for cookery, painting, photography and other crafts produced some stunning displays of workmanship, and the children’s classes showcased the talents of some of the borough’s talented youngsters.

As ever, it was hard to believe that some of those models were made of beeswax.

On Monday, the Mayor, Cllr. Asad Omar (pictured left), and the leader of the Council Cllr. Bill Stephenson (Pictured right) honoured us with a visit, and spent the afternoon admiring the produce,  visiting the stalls and marquees, and chatting to stallholders and visitors. The Mayor’s charity this year is Ovarian Cancer Action. Later the Mayor presented the prizes to the Cup and Shield winners. Click here for a list and pictures of the cup- and prize-winners.

At the Harrow in LEAF marquee, the tombola was a big draw, and 130 people sampled the 11 varieties of tomato grown in our tomato trials. Click here to see full results of the taste test. The three cherry tomato varieties were the most popular, with Gardeners Delight a clear winner. Young visitors to the marquee could plant up a pot of cress seeds to grow at home, and could also enter a competition to guess the number of seeds in a jar.
Information was available on allotments and all matters horticultural, and several people signed up for membership. The plants for sale also proved very popular.

Other attractions for children included the bouncy castle, story telling, candyfloss and other rides, while the adults could enjoy a wide variety of craft, plant and charity stalls, including jewellery, stained glass, cards, clothes, and skin care products. Harrow Radio Society linked up to other enthusiasts around the globe, and with food to cater for every taste, there was more than enough to keep everyone happy.

Our exit questionnaires showed that the show was an overwhelming success and produced some comments and suggestions that we hope will enable us to improve the weekend even more for next year.

Thank you all for coming and we look forward to welcoming you next year for our 7th annual show.
